Trail Maintenance
Lend a hand to support your trails.
From Maine to New Jersey, AMC cares for some of the Northeast’s most iconic trails - more than 1,800 miles in total - and we couldn't do it without you. Every year, our staff works alongside thousands of volunteers to maintain and build trails. By joining one of our trail crews, you can combine your passions of being outdoors and contributing to the protection of the environment. You can also always contribute to our Trails Fund here.
Adopt-A-Trail
Select an available trail to become a steward, where you'll have the opportunity to check on the trail's condition, clear drainage structures, cut back vegetation, and dig into small projects to improve and restore your designated section. Your adoption and maintenance assists our trails department in trail project planning, needs and issues.
Customize a Trail Crew
Create a custom crew to give back to the trails you enjoy - projects range from one to multiple day options, and can be incorporated into any backpacking trip or outdoor adventure at an AMC destination. Our Programs Office will work with you to find the best price and project itinerary for your group.
Volunteer Vacations and Work Days
Volunteer Vacations provide a unique opportunity to revitalize and build trails, engage in conservation activities, and work alongside fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Spend a day, a weekend, or even a full week with AMC's volunteer vacations to experience the beauty of nature in scenic locations and feel a great sense of accomplishment.
Professional Trail Services
AMC’s expertise in trail construction, campsite planning and management, and mapping services reflects more than a century of experience. We pair the most current understanding of sustainable trail design with techniques that we've honed and refined for trails throughout the Northeast. Projects range from urban walkways to rugged backcountry campsites.
AMC AmeriCorps
AMC AmeriCorps offers Members a service opportunity that focuses on improving recreational trail networks in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. AMC AmeriCorps Members serve for a total of 450 hours where they will develop their trail stewardship skills and leadership abilities. Members receive AmeriCorps Education Awards upon completion of their service term. AMC has received accreditation from the Corps Center of Excellence and has proven our ability to provide safe, appropriate, meaningful experiences to the young people who engage in our service projects.
Trails Training Opportunities
At locations like Camp Dodge Trails Center in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and Noble View Outdoor Center in Western Massachusetts, the AMC supports our region’s trails organizations, volunteers, and professionals through trainings, workshops, and conferences.
Chapter-Led Trail Work
Joining our chapter-led volunteer trips is a way to breathe new life into trails, participate in conservation efforts, and collaborate with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Whether it's for a day or an entire weekend, you can immerse yourself in the outdoors, find a deep sense of achievement, and build connections with like-minded individuals.
Annual Trail Sign Auction
Every year AMC’s White Mountain Trail Crew replaces weathered or out-of-date trail signs with new ones. All proceeds from the auction directly support AMC’s trail maintenance efforts. Our annual auction is live through December 10!
