Description

Towering directly over the small foothill community of the Sierra Madre, 3375' Jones Peak divides the watersheds of the Little Santa Anita Canyon to the east, and rugged, steep, narrow Bailey Canyon, where this trip originates.

Most of the trail is shadeless and if the day is sunny, hot. Do it early in the morning or on a cool winter or spring day, and wear sturdy boots for the final, steep scramble to the peak.

The trail switchbacks steeply up the east wall of the canyon and in just over 2 miles you enter the welcome shade of a live-oak forest near the ruins of a small cabin, a nice spot for a break. There will be a short but steep scramble up to the top. If it's a clear day, you are rewarded with a spectacular vista of the San Gabriel Valley and downtown Los Angeles.
