From Highway 18 in the city of Big Bear Lake, drive to the Stanfield Cutoff and turn north. Continue to the junction of Highway 38 (North Shore Drive) located along the north shore of the lake. Turn left (west) and drive approximately 3/8 of a mile to the Woodland Trailhead along the right side of Hwy 38, about one mile east of the Big Bear Discovery Center and immediately across from the East Boat Ramp.
The Woodland Trail provides an excellent introduction to and explanation of the flora indigenous to Big Bear Lake. An informative interpretive guide is provided at the trailhead, with descriptions corresponding to the twenty numbered signs along the trail. Differences between Western Juniper and Incense Cedar are explained, and a number of very common plants discovered at this altitude are identified. The approximately one-and-one half mile loop features mildly steep sections along a well-maintained trail, making this hike is an appropriate warm-up hike for "flatlanders" adjusting
to the mountain altitude prior to treks along the Cougar Crest or Gray's Peak trails located nearby, and spectacular lake views existing near the loop's completion provide an enjoyable experience for hikers of nearly every level of ability.
